Power of Bureaucracy is Sinking poor Sub!!

This is hilarious news item.. very clearly depicts two fundamental problem:

  • Government/Public Sector can never work.. Capitalism is still is our best hope!!
  • There are still fundamental problems with S of PIGS, which is sinking this Sub!! 

It is amazing that this so called decimal problem is making sure that this sub always remains underwater.. Can't imagine that almost bankrupt Spain is still investing in billions of dollars in developing Submarine of their own.. that too by their public sector.. Come on Spaniards.. wake up.. move on.. don't try to build these things.. as long as you can drive them safely that will be good enough for this world!!

Vessel is at least 70 tons too heavy after miscalculation

HARTFORD, Conn. — A new, Spanish-designed submarine has a weighty problem: The vessel is more than 70 tons too heavy, and officials fear if it goes out to sea, it will not be able to
 surface. And a former Spanish official says the problem can be traced to a miscalculation — someone apparently put a decimal point in the wrong place. “It was a fatal mistake,” said Rafael Bardaji, who until recently was director of the Office of Strategic Assessment at Spain’s Defense Ministry.

The Isaac Peral, the first in a new class of diesel-electric submarines, was nearly completed when engineers discovered the problem. A
 Navy contractor in Connecticut, Electric Boat, has signed a deal to help the Spanish Defense Ministry find ways to slim down the 2,200-ton submarine.

The agreement with Groton, Conn.-based Electric Boat calls for Spain to pay $14 million over three years for an assessment of the problem with the S-80 submarine program and the scope of the work that would be required to correct it, the Spanish Defense Ministry said in a statement to The Associated Press.

Bardaji, now a senior fellow with the Strategic Studies Group think tank in Madrid, said officials will review options provided by Electric Boat. But he said the preference has been to extend the length of the submarine’s hull, perhaps by 5 to 6 meters, to increase buoyancy.

Otherwise, the weight of the submarine would have to be reduced, and he said the Spanish Navy would
 not want to compromise features such as the combat system or an air-independent propulsion system.

The Isaac Peral, named for a 19th century Spanish submarine designer, is one of four vessels in the class that are in various stages of construction.

The country has invested about $2.7 billion in the program.

The first was scheduled to be delivered in 2015 but the Spanish state-owned shipbuilder, Navantia, has said the weight problems could cause delays of up to two years.

The 233-foot-long submarine will carry a crew of 32, along with eight special forces troops, and weapons systems for surface and anti-submarine warfare.

The Defense Ministry said technical problems are normal for projects of this scale.

“The technology challenges that these programs face during development
 are much more than simple calculations,” the ministry said.

“All the major military programs, especially submarines, have experienced delays and often have required the support of a technology partner.”

Bardaji said the problem was discovered in the second half of last year, and Navantia told defense officials that somebody had apparently put a decimal point in the wrong place.

“Apparently somebody in the calculations made a mistake in the very beginning and nobody paid attention to review the calculations,” he said.

Electric Boat, the primary contractor for the Navy’s fleet of nuclear submarines, accepted the contract through a foreign military sales agreement between the American Navy and the Spanish Defense Ministry, the U.S. Naval Sea Systems Command announced this week.

This is only going to kill innovation in France..

Come on France.. What's wrong with you... what are you thinking? this is nuts.. you don't want your "ONLY" successful start-up to an American Company? How stupid you can be? One success story like (including sales to Yahoo) this will create hundred other start ups in your country.. there is no better motivation for innovation than money.. pure and simple money.. lots of money..

Moreover, this Daily-motion is distance second cousin to YouTube . I really don't see any major innovation (feel free to educate me if there are any major innovation ideas in Daily-motion)... it is surviving because some people are afraid of Google.. that is it.. There can be ten other companies like this who can really scale and do better than it.. it is, at the best ME-TOO version of YouTube which is popular in your country somehow.. and generated some good traction which resulted in $300M valuation.. I am sure it was peek.. or not.. nevertheless, let capitalism take its own course and if you want innovation and growth in your country try not to interfere with business.. just leave them alone..

Overall, I feel that Yahoo shareholders are lucky that they were spared few hundred million dollars from this acquisition.. which I see as buying users at the best.. I don't think that they will miss anything..

Amazing.. just beautiful.. Rover Landing on MARS!!!

I watched it live on NASA TV and was truly salute all these scientists and engineers who achieved this great feet for human kind. The kind of system they are putting in place is remarkably powerful and hopefully pave way for many more discoveries about past life and more importantly future human life on our dear red planet.

Moreover, the technologies put in place to achieve this feet are remarkable and hopefully lead to more greater achievements in future both for US and humankind in general.

Despite what many people say about spending billions of dollars on such missions as waste when more than three fourth population on earth won't even understand what has been achieved.. forget about caring about such things as they are still worried about clean water and decent food for themselves.

My rationale is.. this money is million or zillion times better spend than other inefficiencies in the systems. For US and developed countries.. Wars are biggest example of wasteful expenditure.. for developing countries, before they ask anything morale about spending so much, they should ask their politician's swiss bank account balance.. I only wish, we could spend more on such scientific achievements.. Hopefully, NASA has bootstrapped this field enough that capitalism will take care of next steps and even greater achievements.

To satisfy Curiosity, signs of life are sought

Rover will check systems for 10 days before rolling out

The whole purpose of the Mars rover is to explore the possibility of life.

So why is it so obsessed with rocks?

Only moments after Curiosity’s safe landing — decelerating from mind bending speeds to a gentle and accurate touchdown — it began sending home photos: Dust. Shadows. Rock.

For a public raised on pulp sci-fi films and literary thrillers, the images fell short of the hopedfor glimpse of dramatic vistas, green goblins or aliens. Now that Curiosity has landed safely, the thrill is gone. We can return our attention to the Olympics.

But for 200 to 300 scientists, turning toward many 16-hour days in Curiosity’s two-year search for signs of life, the excitement is just starting.

“You can see a gravel field,” said an elated John Grotzinger, project manager of NASA’s
 
Mars Science Laboratory mission, describing a grainy black-and-white photo at a Monday briefing at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory.

The rocks, say scientists, will reveal if Mars ever supported germ-sized life. If so, what did it look like? Where did it go? And is it still there, hiding?

Curiosity will look for carbon-based building blocks of life. It will look for habitats that could have once supported life. And it will look for chemical “biosignatures” in rocks that will suggest that Mars may once have sustained life.

On Sunday night, Curiosity landed in a swirl of fine-grained soil in a crater, thought to have once been one of the planet’s wettest places. It’s just north of the sand dunes that fringe “Mount Sharp,” a mountain higher than Mount Whitney.

For the next several days, the rover will start a gradual rev-up of the 10 science instruments and cameras it carries to make sure nothing was damaged during the long journey and dramatic landing.

One of the early tasks will be to check the health of a small nuclear battery. Then the rover will unpack, raising a mast and weather monitoring instruments. By “sol 10” — the10th of the planet’s 24.66-hour days — it will begin wheeling and working.

On Earth, researchers will be living on the slightly
 longer Mars day, incrementally pushing downloaded data and uploaded instructions 40 minutes later every day. Eventually, the Jet Propulsion Laboratory team in Pasadena will be attending 3 a.m. science and planning meetings.

One of their main interests will be in Martian soil. A robotic arm will scoop and dig the iron-laden sands to test in the rover’s mini laboratories. It is not looking for signs of life — but signs that life may be or have been possible.

Life needs energy and water and certain elements. Energy? Check. It’s there. Water? Check, though not
 liquid.

Chemical elements that serve as the building blocks of life? That’s the $64,000 question. No one knows.

“So we’re searching for things like carbon, oxygen, hydrogen, sulfur and nitrogen,” said Bruce Barraclough, designer of the ChemCam instrument, in a Monday radio interview.

“We are not designed to find microbes or fossils but find the elements that life could have evolved from, in specific environments that are hospitable to life,” he said.

Another tool, known as Sample Analysis at Mars, or SAM, can detect methane
 in the Martian atmosphere. Methane breaks down quickly, so there must be some ongoing source. On Earth, it comes from biological creatures like cows. What creates it on Mars?

SAM can break down the distribution of carbon isotopes to determine whether the gas was created biologically or geochemically, perhaps by volcanos.

In the South Bay, NASA Ames senior scientist David Blake designed CheMin, short for chemistry and mineralogy, which uses Xray diffraction to analyze soil and rock samples.

The Red Planet has been a source of legends since early human history. In the 1950s, some scientists concluded that some of its colors that mimicked those of chlorophyll that gives a green color to plants.

But we lost interest in the 1960s, when early Mariner missions sent home photos of a rocky, barren and apparently dead planet.

Hopes were raised — prematurely — in 1976, when Mars Viking mission scientists asserted that they saw evidence of biological activity on the Red Planet. It happened again
 in 1996, when researchers at Johnson Space Center said they had found nanofossils inside a meteorite from Mars.

In 2004, other researchers suggested that methane gases detected on Mars hinted at the presence of life.

So NASA is very cautious, and uses the “L word” — life — very carefully.

No one expects to find living bacteria or fossils in this rock.

But if Mars ever bore life, once wet sediments from 4 billion years ago preserved in neatly layered years would be the perfect place to find its record.

“Things may seem slow,” said NASA Ames’ Blake. “But we have a precious resource up there. It’s worth much, much more than the $2.5 billion that has been invested.

“We want to preserve it, and keep it doing things for years. We will not hazard this rover. We’re here for the long haul.”

True test of Capitalism!!

If you have read history of flying in early part of 1900s.. and then you read these news.. lot of similarity.. That time it was huge amount of excitement and big investment by rich and famous.. However, Wright bros took the challenge with minimal resources.. This time, though NASA and other government agencies have monopolized earlier part of space age.. but I think, real innovation in Space age will come now.. not only it will make it more cheaper but it will result in much more innovative ways of traveling space and much beyond that..

This will be a big test of Capitalism as private sector takes lead into space age.. Greed can drive lot of innovation but at the same time it can take nasty turn. So far it seems that private entrepreneurs are going in right direction.  But it is too early to predict the final outcome. This one in particular was actually more of NASA hand-holding but big step and risk taken by private sector.

Hope these guys will work harder so I can possibly take affordable commercial flight to space!!

First capsule hired to deliver commercial cargo

WASHINGTON — A privately built space capsule that’s zipping its way to the International Space Station has also launched something else: A new forprofit
 space race. The capsule called Dragon was due to arrive near the space station for tests early Thursday and dock Friday with its load of supplies. Space Exploration Technologies — run by Tesla Motors CEO and PayPal co-founder Elon Musk — was hired by NASA to deliver cargo and eventually astronauts to the orbital outpost. And the space agency is hiring others, too. Several firms think they can make money in space and are close enough to Musk’s company to practically surf in his spaceship’s rocket-fueled wake. There are now more companies looking to make money in orbit — at least eight — than major U.S. airlines still flying.Private space companies have talked for years about ferrying goods and astronauts for NASA, but this is the first time one is actually in orbit and about to make a delivery for the space agency. “Dragon is not the only entrant in commercial cargo,” said Jeff Greason, president of XCOR Aerospace, which specializes in the also-busy suborbital marketplace. “They have competitors nipping at their heels.”Still, Dragon’s launch is “the spark that will ignite a flourishing commercial spaceflight marketplace,” said Michael Lopez-Alegria, president of the Commercial Spaceflight Federation and a former astronaut.

Hiring Musk’s SpaceX and other private companies is a key part of NASA’s plan to shift focus. Instead of routine flights to the space station with the now retired space shuttles, NASA is aiming farther out to places like asteroids and Mars. After this test flight, SpaceX has a contract with NASA for a dozen delivery runs.

The idea is to “let private industry do what it does best and let NASA tackle the challenging task of pushing the boundary further,” NASA Deputy Administrator Lori Garver said last week.

NASA has given seed money and contracts to several companies to push them on their way. But eventually, space missions could launch, dock to a private space station or hotel and return to Earth and not have anything to do
 with NASA or any other country’s space agency.

Earlier this month, Hawthorne-based SpaceX signed an agreement with Bigelow Aerospace of Nevada, which is designing inflatable space stations for research and maybe even tourists. SpaceX and other companies will provide the transportation — like airlines — and Bigelow the place to stay. There are already eight different licensed spaceports in the U.S. where companies can launch from and most of them have no connection to NASA.

Another space launchand- tourism company, Richard Branson’s Virgin Galactic, is working separately from NASA and the space station.

If NASA isn’t involved, there is one federal agency that is. The Federal Aviation Administration has a commercial space office that licenses private space missions and works with NASA to set safety standards.

An update on some of the closest competitors to
 SpaceX:

 Orbital Sciences of Dulles, Va., is in the cargoonly business, but it is closest to launch. It has a NASA contract for $1.9 billion for eight cargo flights to the space station once its rockets succeed.

 Alliant Techsystems, headquartered in Arlington, Va., isn’t funded by NASA’s commercial space program but has developed the Liberty rocket and passenger spacecraft system. Most of the rocketry and capsule systems have been tested. A key structural test of the rocket’s second stage is scheduled for early July.

 Boeing of Chicago has nearly $113 million in NASA commercial crew funding and just finished its second parachute drop test in the Nevada desert. It has completed 46 of 52 milestones needed before flights, spokeswoman Susan Wells said. A landing air bag test is targeted for fall. n Sierra Nevada Corp. of Sparks, Nev., with nearly $106 million from NASA, is building a mini-shuttle crew vehicle called Dream Chaser with a first flight targeted for 2016 or possibly 2017. The company this year finished landing gear tests and has a full-scale ship for flight testing attached to a helicopter this fall in California.

 The most secretive of the companies, Blue Origin of Kent, Wash., is run by Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and has received $22 million from NASA. Its crew and cargo vehicle, called New Shepard, would also take tourists to suborbit. Its shell passed wind tunnel tests and its engines are now being test fired at NASA’s Stennis Space Center.

Amazing number I found few days back.. Very interesting..

One billion people sleep every day - HUNGRY
One billion people suffer from - Malnutrition
One billion people suffer from - Over-eating (Over weight or Obese)

Probably, One billion people must be wasting food every day as well.. or more..

Out of Seven Billion Population!! or what is it now? Eight Billion?

After reading this article I feel guilty when I over eat some day..

What is solution? Communism? or Capitalism? Both of them failed in past. some more some less.  I guess, We should introduce another form of government "Humanitarian"!!! or tear down this bloody Nationalism boundaries.. or what ever form of group any theory may produce. Religion.. Nationalism, Racism.. all are in some ways responsible for this mess. We ought to dump these old theories and become true human and earthling.. and just live like earthling.. and remember that we are most gifted earthling.. and help each other grow.. Even after seven or eight billion population, earth is still big enough to take care of everyone.

I know it is dream but there is nothing formed physically without dreams.. To certain extent, Internet is helping tear down these man made walls and silos.. What is Facebook population.. Half billion of already a billion??? Just kidding. but hey.. you never know.. Facebook may be new Religion in next 20 or 50 years.. and Mark Zuckerburg may be God of Twenty second Century.. Only I wish we could start teleporting food on internet way we just now communicate audio and video.. Cisco.. Juniper.. Do something!!!!
