4th July. Around 12.30 pm noon time. Local grocery store. Big Queue at checkout counters. Most of the people are checking out with beer and other alcoholic beverages.
How come Alchohol only gives us sense of freedom. Well, not just 4th July. All major celebrations are now a days linked with significant higher consumption of alcohol and related beverages. Does all these toxins which essentially disable our brain cells and disable our decision making and thinking capabilities are the only way to celebrate. Off course, there are exceptions... But when majority of population only celebrates and gets happiness in these toxins, then there is something wrong.
I regularly go for blood donations. They specifically have drives before 4th July weekend so there are adequate supplies of blood before this weekend to cover higher consumption of blood units due to higher number of road accidents due to higher number of drunk drivings. Despite fact that every one knows that all the law enforcement officials work 24X7 during these kind of weekends to spot and ticket drunk drivers. No offense to anybody getting into accidents, but honestly I don't feel great in saving bloody drunk drivers life with my blood. I would rather donate it after this mad rush or surge is over and may be I donate to really some sober person getting into accidents(Hopefully)... However, I can't choose whom to save or whom not to save... and moreover their are no guarantees who will be saved and who won't. Who knows it may be saving someone who got hit by these drunk drivers..
Bottom line, I honestly started thinking about celebrating without alcohol (some will say that "Sau Chuhe Kha Kar Billi Haj ko Chali").. I would rather drink some when I can really relax and enjoy and really want my thinking power to take rest.. Let us see ;-)
PS: I had written this on July 4th 2011. Somehow forgot to post it.. However, this is mostly relevant even now...
